The Red Sea Blend Returns
Every year we search high and low for the best micro-lot available from Yemen. Putting the ongoing debate about the possible true birthplace of coffee aside (the Yemeni’s claim this title, but most people agree it’s actually Ethiopia) we immerse ourselves in the flavors of this ancient land. Yemeni coffees are fantastic: they are rich, savory, and deeply toned with notes of licorice, dried fruit, and chocolate. This coffee has character. Period. And we found a great one this year.
We then combine our favorite Ethiopian from the other side of the Red Sea, the sun-dried Sidama Natural from the Hache Cooperative in southern Ethiopia. The pairing is intoxicating. Where the Yemen is deep, the Ethiopian soars: sweet bursts of strawberries, and juicy red wine notes. The blend produces an intense cup of coffee. Each sip brings out a different side. Sweet. Syrupy. Salty. Heavy. Chocolaty. Berries. Licorice. And more. Try some for yourself—it’s available in limited quantities until March 15.
A Classic Gets Better
We’ve remodeled our signature espressos: the Organic Northern Italian and Organic Southern Italian style blends. Each blend is designed with the discerning barista or espresso aficionado in mind, and is composed of coffees which contribute distinctive sweetness, heavy body, and rich crema. We roast each to maximize the expression of the two traditional espresso styles—delicate and floral or rich and smoky. Though they are designed with espresso preparation in mind, each blend works well as a drip coffee, or brewed in a French Press.
A Recent Visit to Uganda
Holly Moskowitz, our Director of National Sales and Grassroots Outreach, spent the last week of December and the first two weeks of January in Uganda with the farmers of the Peace Kawomera Cooperative. Holly has a background in medicine, and helped to lead a series of public health workshops raising awareness about prevention of HIV/AIDS, late onset diabetes, and high blood pressure. She also spent a lot of time visiting with farmers, talking with them about their lives, their struggles, their dreams, and the ways that their cooperative has changed their lives. These are the true stories of Fair Trade. Visit our Mirembe Kawomera “Delicious Peace” Blog to read more.
